Fighting Cuts & Privatisation - NSSN Conference | 22 January

FIGHT PUBLIC SECTOR CUTS: Defend Public Services

We would like to welcome trade unionists, anti cuts alliances, trades councils and anyone else who is prepared to fight the cuts and ongoing privatisation to attend and take part in the campaigns. We didn’t create this crisis, we shouldn’t have to pay for it!

Facebook event

This ConDem government of millionaires has declared war on the public sector as it plans to cut massively the jobs and servic…es of millions of working people. Hundreds of local campaigns against the cuts have already broken out, involving workers under threat of losing their jobs and those in the community who rely on these vital services.

The NSSN believes that the conference main role will be to pull together all those organisations, whether workplace trade unions or community based campaigns, to hammer out a fi ghting programme of action including joint industrial action to defeat the cuts. We say not one job or one service should be cut to pay for the crisis caused by the bankers. (£5 per delegate/Visitor)

PLEASE ALSO INVITE OTHERS, THANKS!

Defend Council Housing Tenants’ Protest at Parliament | 9 November

Tenants will protest outside Parliament next week against attacks on our rents, security and rights.

DCH and tenant groups are calling the lobby and protest at: 5.30pm Tuesday 9th November at College Green, Westminster.

Tenants oppose Government plans to cut Housing Benefit, erode secure tenancies and affordable rents, breaking pre-election promises. MPs will vote on a motion opposing Housing Benefit cuts on 9th November.

The changes proposed in the June Budget and last month’s Spending Review affect council, housing association and private tenants. They will devaste lives, increasing debt, evictions and homelessness, while cutting investment in existing and new council housing.
Eileen Short, chair of Defend Council Housing says:

‘We demand MPs and councillors stop these attacks on tenants, and instead curb high rents and build secure affordable homes for rent.

‘Tenants have defeated such attacks on our tenancies and rents by previous Governments. Now we need to stand together with trade unions, politicians and campaigners, to defeat these attacks.’

Notes

This protest lobby will follow a meeting at 3pm on Tuesday 9th November in Parliament with the Council Housing Group of MPs and others to co-ordinate opposition to these measures.

Cuts in Housing Benefit were announced in the June Budget

Introducing time limited shorthold tenancies for new tenants, and rent increases up to 80% of market rents, were in the October Spending Review along with cuts to investment in council housing.
